The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
