2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Comes After Poor Reception
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all eager to keep witnessing the development of the game in the months to ahead.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development advances.
