New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
