No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
