The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.
Although the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.
At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.
A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.
The layoffs took place on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
